What’s the big deal about wine from Alsace?

Alsace is a wine region in Eastern France on the border of France and Germany. It lies on the Rhine River and has influences from both countries. In fact, it's been controlled by both, back and forth, over the centuries.

If you want to learn about the eccentricities of the laws regarding wine production and how they differ from the traditional French rules, I’d be happy to bend your ear!

For the non-wine geek in you, let’s talk about the wine itself so you can get on with enjoying this world class style.

Alsatian white wines are dry, not oaky, and rich on the palate. They also have bright acidity and minerality, which make them well rounded, versatile wines. Perfect for summer drinking but also surprisingly versatile. Try a Pinot Blanc with your Thanksgiving dinner!

Fruit notes, like peach, apple and pear abound. White flowers and clear gummy bears (!) also show. And for special occasions, there is an amazing sparkling wine called Cremant d’Alsace you can find cheaper than its cousin from Champagne!

 Most of the wine you’ll find in Alsace is white wine. They are made up largely of varietals you’d expect from Germany. Specifically, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Sylvaner. Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir can also be found. The Pinot Noir is usually found in rosé and red wine.
