Gin-uary: Try Some New Gin for Your January!
Gin-uary: Try Some New Gin for Your January!
Our Top 5 Picks
The dreaded “dry January” has come, and though the peer-pressure of staying away from alcohol may have impacted some of you, we know just as many are trying to sheepishly sneak a drink here and there. For those willing to abandon the notion of dry January altogether, we offer Ginuary in its place! Here are our picks for some cool, lesser-known, and delicious Gins to kick off your 2023 with!
Hardshore Gin - $36
A surprisingly complex Gin made with only 5 botanicals: rosemary, mint, orris root, coriander, and juniper. Made in Maine, Hardshore is underrated in the market for sure. With tonic, it shows beautiful bright notes and, in a Negroni, it produces some truly spectacular flavors. However you drink this one, you’re sure to be in for a treat!
Neversink Gin - $45
Not only is Neversink made in New York (Port Chester in Westchester, to be exact), it is a really exciting Gin that breaks the mold by using, rather than a neutral base spirit, apples! It doesn’t skimp on the botanicals either, with 11 in its makeup: juniper, orange peel, grapefruit peel, lemon peel, coriander, star anise, cardamom, angelica, orris, cinnamon, and elderflower. With all these flavors, I would recommend drinking this one neat or on the rocks to get the full benefit of the botanicals.
Plymouth Gin - $32
The only foreigner on this list, made in Plymouth, England at England’s oldest working Gin distillery, Plymouth Gin is a beautifully classic take on the spirit. 7 botanicals bring vegetal flavors to the fore: juniper, coriander seed, orange peel, lemon peel, angelica root, green cardamom, and orris. Between the earthy juniper and the bite of the lemon, this is Gin exactly as you’d expect it to be - and if you’re new to Gin, this is the place to start.
Tod & Vixen Dry Gin 1651 - $30
Specifically built for cocktails (and don’t hold anything against it for that), The Vale Fox Distillery in Poughkeepsie, New York builds this Gin from 8 botanicals: juniper, angelica root, orris root, coriander seed, dried orange peel, fresh orange peel, red rooibos tea, and Makrut lime leaves. You can see from the botanicals that there’s a strong sense of fruit and acidity. Bold and vibrant, Tod & Vixen is best shown in cocktails.
Suncliffe Gin - $40
This one is a bit of a curiosity. Made in Arizona, built from botanicals that aren’t all made apparent, this Gin is a gift for thrill-seekers. But rest assured, we’ve had it and we love it! We could tell you what it tastes like… but if you’re still reading, I’m betting you want to experience this mystery yourself. We know you won’t be disappointed!
